China's crackdown on intellectuals

China has been cracking down on intellectuals in recent years. After President Xi Jinping came to power in 2012, China’s vibrant intellectual circles gradually fell silent as Party critics were arrested, fired from their institutions or forced to flee abroad1. In 2013, the party banned discussion of “Western concepts” such as universal values, a free press, civil society and the party’s historical errors2. In 2018, teachers from kindergarten through university were ordered to adhere to “Xi Jinping thought” and defend the party2. This has led to public shaming of intellectuals that remind many of the Mao Zedong era2.
