 Before it’s too late, not only America but all of its Western allies must grasp that the Chinese Communist Party behaves like an enemy

It is becoming increasingly clear that Chinese computer hackers may have penetrated American military and civil critical infrastructure in ways that could cripple a US response to Chinese armed aggression from the outset. Certainly that would align with Beijing’s strategy, familiar from Sun Tzu’s “Art of War”, which is to win the war before a shot is fired.  

In the modern digital context this entails preemptive cyber attacks not just against its enemies’ military forces, but also on the pillars of social and economic security, including communications, transport, energy, water and health systems. The aim is to damage opponents so badly that battle would never be joined, or only briefly before they collapse into domestic disarray and disaster. 

To achieve this, China must first access data on the targets it wants to disrupt, and then devise cyber attacks that will avoid preventive measures and create sudden, irreversible havoc. The US is now desperately hunting for malicious software discovered inside the power grids and communications systems that supply its military. The tools for a pre-emptive first strike against the West could already be in place.

It seems that US intelligence became aware of a serious threat to national security in February, around the time of the spy balloon episode. Since May, according to Microsoft, Chinese hackers have been secretly accessing data from the State Department and Commerce Department, among other targets including Western European entities. 

These developments are part of an established pattern. A Chinese attack in 2021, compromising the Microsoft exchange server, was blamed by the UK Foreign Office and National Cyber Security Centre on the Chinese Ministry of State Security. A year later, the directors of the UK and US security services together announced that China “posed the biggest long-term threat to our economic and national security”. At the same time Nato, at its 2022 Summit, declared that “the PRC’s malicious hybrid and cyber operations and its confrontational rhetoric and disinformation target allies and harm alliance security”.

The US military is scrambling to find out how badly Chinese cyber warfare has compromised America’s defences. The UK lags far behind; despite years of clear warnings by the intelligence and security community, there has yet to be a proper UK response. However uncomfortable it may be to accept for beneficiaries of the faux “Golden Era” when Beijing bought its way into the UK establishment, the CCP was then, and is now, waging relentless hybrid warfare against us and our Allies and partners.

Beijing was shamefully welcomed into our nuclear sector, and deeply embedded in much else. It is to be assumed that they are hoovering up vast quantities of British data, encrypted and unencrypted. What they can’t read now, they are believed to be storing against the day that evolving quantum computer technologies crack the codes.

Before it’s too late, not only America but all of its Western allies and partners must grasp that the Chinese Communist Party – and not the unfortunate citizens it rules over – looks like an enemy and acts like an enemy because it is our enemy. Will it take catastrophic cyber attacks on our civil critical infrastructure and our militaries being brought to their knees before a shot is fired for our politicians to wake up?

China distances itself from ambassador's 'absurd' remarks over Ukraine independence

China has sought to distance itself from controversial remarks about the sovereignty of Ukraine after widespread outrage. China's Paris ambassador Lu Shaye made the comments last week, and now Bejing has been urged to clarify its position. On Monday, China's foreign ministry rowed back against the comments and insisted that Beijing respected the independence of all post-Soviet republics, rejecting Lu's position.

During an interview with Frances' LCI network, Lu called into question Ukraine's right to defend it's sovereignty under international law.

He said: "Even these former Soviet countries don't have an effective status under international law because there is no international agreement under international law to concretise their status as sovereign countries."

According to a statement from the Chinese embassy in Paris, Lu's remarks were viewed as a personal point of view and should not be taken too seriously.

Three Baltic countries, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, have summoned Chinese representatives to clarify Lu's remarks, which have been criticised by other European Union foreign ministers.

Mykhaylo Podolyak, a presidential assistant in Ukraine, called Lu's understanding of international law and approach to Crimea "absurd."

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning publically rebuked Lu's comments on Monday.

She insisted that while "the Soviet Union was a federal state and had the status of an entity of international law in its entirety in foreign affairs... this does not deny the fact that each member republic of the Soviet Union has the status of a sovereign state after the dissolution of the Soviet Union".

Meanwhile, British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly is set to deliver a speech at Mansion House in London, where he will call on China to be transparent about its military expansion, which he describes as the biggest in peacetime history.

The Foreign Secretary is tipped to warn of the risks of a new cold war with China and the possibility of a "tragic miscalculation" in the Indo-Pacific region if China continues its aggressive behaviour.

Despite his concerns about the situation in the Xinjiang region, he argues that Britain must continue to engage with China and that it would be a betrayal of British interests to isolate the country.

The speech comes amid rising tensions with Beijing over Taiwan and concerns that China will try to take over the island nation, similar to Russia's actions in Ukraine.

The Telegraph reports that Mr Cleverely will say: "It would be clear and easy - perhaps even satisfying - for me to declare a new cold war and say that our goal is to isolate China.

"Clear, easy, satisfying - and wrong. Because it would be a betrayal of our national interest and a wilful misunderstanding of the modern world."

The main topic of the Mansion House speech, a platform historically used by foreign secretaries to express their opinions on a wide range of foreign policy matters, will be China.

According to the Pentagon, China is growing its nuclear missile silos and on track to have a stockpile of 1,500 nuclear warheads by 2035.

Furthermore, China is developing hypersonic missiles capable of evading US defences, as well as space weapons capable of deactivating satellites.

BEIJING, Sept 29 (Reuters) - China signalled on Thursday no let-up in its combative approach to foreign policy in a third term for Xi Jinping as leader despite criticism from many Western diplomats that the so-called Wolf Warrior stance has been counterproductive.

As relations with the West have soured over issues from trade and human rights to COVID-19, Chinese diplomats have often been confrontational on the public stage, including on social media, a stridency that some critics see as intended for a domestic audience that nonetheless hurts its foreign ties.

"We Chinese will not capitulate. We will not sit and do nothing while our country's interests are being harmed," Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu said in response to a Reuters question at a Thursday news conference to discuss Chinese diplomacy in the decade since Xi assumed power.

"Going forward, Chinese diplomats will continue to overcome all obstacles, and always be the devoted guardians of the interests of our country and our people," said Ma, who is considered to be among contenders to replace Wang Yi as foreign minister in an upcoming leadership reshuffle.

Xi is poised to break with precedent and secure a third leadership term at next month's once-in-five-years congress of the ruling Communist Party.

Xi has urged Chinese diplomats to have more "fighting spirit", an instruction that has seen many Chinese officials take to social media platforms including Twitter, which is blocked in China, with an aggression that has come to be known as "Wolf Warrior" diplomacy, after a patriotic movie franchise.

A global survey released this week by the Washington-based Pew Research Center found that public opinion towards China in the United States and other advanced economies had turned "precipitously more negative" under Xi.

Falling Beijing is destroying its foreign relations to pump hyper-nationalism in the country

 

Covid-19 was supposed to give a reality check to Xi Jinping administration. And it actually did, but Jinping has taken to ulterior routes in order to avoid possible exigencies. He is now down to utilising hyper-nationalism in order to increase his chances of getting back to power. He seems to be ready to destroy China’s foreign policy for this purpose as well.

Chinese increased aggression along the borders

Several reports from India, as well as other countries like USA, have revealed that the Chinese are reinvigorating their military presence in its neighbourhood. A few days back, it was reported that Chinese have tested an advanced Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS). There are extremely high chances that Chinese will deploy this rocket along India-China border. The speculations of it being deployed along LAC are fuelled by failed round of talks between India and China at Chusul-Moldo border. Additionally, Chinese state media also broadcasted a clip in which Chinese Army was carrying out an exercise over Pangong lake.

But, the exercise was one of the many incidents of peace violations by the PLA. From mid June, Chinese Air Force has been carrying out large scale air-defence exercises along the contested areas. As a counter measure, Indian Air Force is also quite alert and has manoeuvred fighter jets in the region. Air Force is also conducting night patrols. VR Chaudhari, India’s Air Chief Marshal said, “Chinese aircraft activity is closely monitored by us. Whenever we see Chinese aircraft or remotely piloted aircraft coming too close to the LAC, we take appropriate measures by scrambling or putting our aircraft on higher alert. This has deterred them quite a lot,…”

India gave a reputational blow to China

Ever since Indian Armed Forces struck a massive blow to China in Galwan, the Communist nation has been trying to win back its reputation of extraordinary military powers. Before Galwan, most countries in the region feared that China would trample over their sovereignty.

Its overtures in the South China Sea in particular and Indian Ocean in general indicated that. But, thrashing by Bihar regiment jawans punctured the narrative around powerful Chinese military. After that, India led a coordinated economic, diplomatic and strategic offensive against the Communist nation.

Regional countries in favour of India

Other countries of the region also joined in. India quickly engaged regional nations like Japan, Philippines among others in its anti-China initiative. The Philippines will soon be getting BrahMos from India while it is well known fact that Japan is our QUAD partner and anyday, it will choose India over China.

Similarly, Vietnam gave a severe jolt to China by snatching a part of manufacturing units from its production lines. Sri Lanka, another island nation located at strategic location has also witnessed anti-China upheaval in the wake of its economic crisis. The question of who will take over the space vacated by China is to be sorted out between India and the USA, which are overtly strategic partners in QUAD, i2U2 and few other forums.

Tensions with the USA

This is the reason why China has increased its offensives on the geographies under the influence of the USA as well. China has become more aggressive on its one-China policy. In a phone call with General Mike Milley of the United States, Gen. Li Zuocheng, China’s Joint Chief of staff chairman, told him that Beijing had “no room for compromise” on issues such as Taiwan.

Possibly to showcase that it was not a hollow threat, top brass of the China’s polity recently came down heavily on Nancy Pelosi’s planned trip to Taiwan. There are calls for Chinese aircraft keeping an eye of Pelosi’s Taiwan trips. Military officials of the United States have estimated that Jinping is planning to take over Taiwan by the year 2027.

All this is happening at a time when Xi Jinping is facing domestic credibility challenge. China’s economy is in decline, his lockdowns have been unpopular and even his own party members are now criticsing him. It is getting tougher for him to come back later this year. Jingoism is the only option left for him.

China foreign minister slams Pelosi's Taiwan trip in ASEAN meet

PHNOM PENH -- China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Thursday hit out at U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan during his meeting with his Southeast Asian counterparts, who are wary of cross-strait tensions turning into "open conflicts."

In a statement by the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang said the visit was a "blatant provocation" and branded the U.S. the "biggest destroyer of peace in the Taiwan Strait and the biggest troublemaker for regional stability."

Wang also called Pelosi's Taiwan trip a "manic, irresponsible, and extremely irrational action" by the U.S.

Southeast Asian foreign ministers, in a statement on Thursday, said they were "concerned" about the ongoing cross-strait tensions, noting that they are occurring next door to Southeast Asia.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations warned that the developments could "destabilize the region and eventually could lead to miscalculation, serious confrontation, open conflicts and unpredictable consequences among major powers."

China launched live-fire military drills in areas surrounding Taiwan on Thursday to demonstrate its fury over Pelosi's meeting with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen the previous day. Beijing had earlier imposed trade restrictions on Taipei.

China, which considers self-ruled Taiwan part of its territory, has fiercely opposed the visit, the first by a U.S. House speaker in 25 years, fearing it could embolden Taiwan to rebuff Beijing's reunification efforts.

In a separate meeting with ASEAN ministers on Thursday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken addressed the Taiwan issue. He said Washington remains committed to its "One China" policy and that it has reached out to Beijing "at every level of government" to ease tensions.

"I hope very much that Beijing will not manufacture a crisis or seek a pretext to increase its aggressive military activity," Blinken said.

"We and countries around the world believe that escalation serves no one and could have unintended consequences that serve no one's interests, including ASEAN members, and including China."

ASEAN has appealed for "maximum restraint," and urged parties to refrain from provocative actions. "We reiterate ASEAN member states' respective 'One China' policy," the 10-member bloc said.

Wang also met with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Wednesday and discussed the issue. Wang said the "provocative act of the U.S. side on the Taiwan question is not accidental, but a carefully planned farce, which exposes its ugly face of treachery," Xinhua reported.

Cambodia, this year's ASEAN chair, is hosting a series of foreign ministerial meetings through Friday, when Wang and Blinken are likely to join the ASEAN Regional Forum security talks.

Southeast Asia is central to the U.S.-China strategic competition and Pelosi's visit to Taiwan became a key issue as the ASEAN foreign ministers opened their meetings on Wednesday.

In a statement the same day, Singapore said it hoped that the U.S. and China can "work out a modus vivendi, exercise self-restraint and refrain from actions that will further escalate tensions."

"Stable U.S.-China relations are vital for regional peace and prosperity," Singapore's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
